Technical due diligence on a new compost-based product

BACKGROUND

Our client, an Australian waste recycling and recovery company, currently generates significant quantities of low-value compost products at one of their recycling operations in New South Wales.

Seeking avenues to enhance the value of their product, they identified a promising technology and a company utilizing it, presenting an acquisition opportunity.

To assess the technical merits of the technology and the resulting product independently, our client required validation. However, they lacked the internal capability and capacity to conduct the evaluation.

OUR WORK

Key results

We prevented our client from making a detrimental investment decision, safeguarding them from potential harm. By identifying an alternative pathway, we enabled our clients to attain their desired commercial outcome while preserving their brand reputation.

  • We compiled a comprehensive and informative database of product trials using a combination of desktop research and targeted interviews with product suppliers, industry experts, academics, and government entities.

  • We compiled all of the claimed benefits and identified drawbacks of the technology, and attempted to validate each with robust scientific evidence.

  • We ideated a potential product and outlined the steps required to validate it in a gold-standard trial before taking it to market and risking brand reputation.

  • We identified 15 trials conducted using the specific product and 37 trials using products from related product categories. While some trials demonstrated promising outcomes, the majority had scientific flaws in their design and reported inconsistent results.

  • We identified 9 potential benefits and 6 potential drawbacks of the product. We were unable to validate the 3 biggest potential benefits using existing evidence, however.

CLIENT STATEMENT

Scimita helped us understand the technology landscape in an area unfamiliar to us. If we had a year to do this, then we may have been able to afford the time to do it but Scimita accelerated the process of where we wanted to get to in the understanding of the technology.

The highlight was project management aspects, clear actions, and communication of actions on what was needed by us.
