Process Engineer - Junior, Mid-level or Senior
Company: Scimita Ventures
Location: Sydney, Australia
Employment Type: Full-time
Scimita Group is an agile technology development and commercialisation business that deploys 'cutting edge science' to produce 'leading edge innovation'. Founded in 2017, Scimita is where research meets commercialisation, where academia meets creativity, a melting pot of bright minds turning ideas into reality/products.
With the advent of new projects we have the need to hire up to 5 Process Engineers to join our growing team. We are looking to hire junior, mid-level and senior candidates to play a critical role in translating innovative concepts into scalable, sustainable technologies. Each role will work collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams, with opportunities to specialise in ONE OR MORE of the following three key focus streams:
1) Process Simulation and Techno-Economic Analysis.
Engineers in this stream focus on process modelling and simulation to inform decision-making across the technology development lifecycle. This stream suits engineers who combine strong computational skills with a commercial mindset and can communicate complex technical insights to both technical and business audiences.
Key activities include:
Developing and refining process models and digital twins to inform design and optimise performance.
Performing techno-economic analyses and cost estimation for feasibility and investment studies.
Supporting business case development through data-driven evaluation of process alternatives.
Interfacing with research scientists to translate laboratory results into scalable engineering models.
2) Pilot Plant Design, Build, and Commissioning.
Engineers in this stream bridge the gap between concept and reality. They take ownership of designing, specifying, and integrating equipment for pilot and demonstration-scale systems, ensuring that experimental intent is faithfully translated into practical, safe, and operable process units. This stream suits engineers who enjoy working at the interface of design and execution, bringing processes to life and troubleshooting systems in real time.
Key activities include:
Developing BFDs, PFDs, P&IDs, equipment lists, mass and energy balances, and technical specifications.
Selecting, procuring, and integrating process equipment for pilot operations.
Leading commissioning, operation, and troubleshooting of laboratory and pilot-scale systems.
Conducting HAZOP, HAZID, and other safety risk assessments, implementing mitigation strategies.
Managing contractors and liaising with vendors to ensure design intent and compliance.
Capturing high-quality operational data to validate scale-up assumptions.
3) Technical Leadership and Concept Development.
Engineers in this stream provide early-stage technical direction across R&D and commercialisation projects. As technical leads, they are responsible for guiding project teams to successful delivery - aligning multidisciplinary efforts, ensuring technical coherence, and maintaining momentum from concept to validation.
Key activities include:
Developing and refining process concepts and flowsheets for new technologies.
Designing experimental and test programs to generate data for process validation.
Providing technical direction across multidisciplinary teams and partner organisations.
Reviewing engineering deliverables for accuracy, coherence, and completeness.
Contributing to R&D roadmaps, technical risk management, and commercial readiness planning.
Successful applicants will be/have:
Research-based degree (Honours, Masters, or PhD) in Chemical or Process Engineering, or another relevant discipline; or equivalent qualifications or on-the-job experience.
2+ years of relevant industry experience in process design, scale-up, or technology commercialisation. Note: the more senior role sought, the more years of experience required.
Demonstrated involvement in pilot plant design, process simulation, or techno-economic evaluation.
Strong grasp of core process engineering design principles and practical application.
Skilled in process modelling and economic evaluation tools.
Proven ability to work collaboratively across multi-organisation teams.
Able to distill technical findings into clear, actionable insights.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
(For Senior Engineers) Ability to guide junior/mid-level engineers and maintain technical standards.
Applicants at all levels welcome! If this opportunity is of interest and you meet the criteria above, please APPLY or email us directly at careers@scimitaventures.com
***Please specify your stream/s of specialisation (1,2,3) in your application***
Note: In the event of a high volume of applications, we won't be able to reach out to all candidates. Only suitable candidates will be contacted.
