Discovery and Development of a breakthrough Li-Ion battery recycling technology
BACKGROUND
Electrification of the economy using renewable electricity is considered one of the major pathways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Electrification at large-scale is only possible using batteries at a global scale. Lithium-ion batteries are the dominant type of battery for this application. However, lithium-ion batteries have a limited life space and producing new ones from virgin materials is environmentally unsustainable.
When Li-ion batteries reach their end of life, they are either sent to landfill or recycled using environmentally unsustainable technologies. These technologies are only commercially viable at large-scale, which has limited their implementation due to safety hazards and costs associated with Li-ion battery handling and stockpiling.
Our client desires an environmentally sustainable and economically viable technology to recycle Li-ion batteries. This technology was to be genuinely differentiable from current technologies being explored by other industry players. The technology must be suitable for small-scale and distributed recycling operations.
OUR WORK
Key results
We discovered and developed a first-of-a-kind recycling technology. We secured tier 1 industry partners and secured our clients’ first commercial customers.
We developed a modular technology that can reduce the cost of recycling to a third of the current benchmark.
We proved our client’s technology at a laboratory scale. We have achieved an over 95% recovery rate in less than eight months.
We secured the interest of a tier 1 engineering and manufacturing partner for a smooth and rapid transition of technology from the current development phase to the production phase.
We secured the interest of a tier 1 customer for our clients, negotiated an MOU and executed one.
